Animal Lover
Counseling Intern
Hello! As a Colorado native and lifelong animal lover, becoming a counseling intern here at Finding Hiawatha is truly a dream come true. My journey toward animal-assisted therapy began at the University of Colorado Boulder, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Evolutionary and Ecology Biology. I initially channeled my passion into animal facility management and veterinary medicine, but through these experiences, I realized my true calling lay at the intersection of animal care and human emotional healing. To pursue this passion, I enrolled in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s program at Adams State University in January of 2025, with a focus on facilitating transformational growth alongside four-legged co-therapists.
My clinical perspective is deeply informed by the science of the human-animal bond. This connection is rooted in neuroscience and neurobiology, driving physiological shifts in both humans and animals, such as stress reduction and somatic regulation, that foster safety and connection in the therapeutic space. Animals have also been a cornerstone in my own healing journey. My late dog, Kiloh, taught me priceless lessons in emotional regulation and unconditional love throughout my emerging adulthood. Today, I share my life with an 11-year-old clever kitty named Xena, who loves to vocalize her thoughts and settle in for gentle pats on her head and a treat (or four).
I take an integrative, client-centered approach to counseling, drawing from evidence-based modalities to best meet each individual’s unique needs. I strive to meet clients where they are and create a space where they feel safe to show up authentically, without judgment. I believe therapy is a collaborative process, and I hope to support clients in developing greater self-understanding, building meaningful connections, and navigating life’s challenges with greater confidence and compassion. When appropriate, I also incorporate the human-animal bond into the therapeutic process, allowing the presence and unique strengths of our four-legged co-therapists to support connection, regulation, and growth.
